Once Again - Shahenda Soliman

“Once Again” explores the emotional traces left by the traumas and experiences we try to hide. Through vibrant colors and expressive forms, the figures attempt to transform their pain into something brighter, yet what lies beneath inevitably reveals itself. The work reflects how, despite our efforts to conceal what we carry within, our experiences often remain visible to those around us.

Shahenda Soliman is an Egyptian-New Zealand artist who migrated to New Zealand in 2007.
She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours from the University of Auckland in 2013, specializing in painting. Her work has been exhibited in a number of local and international galleries.
In her latest collection, “Inside Out,” Shahenda explores the complex emotions of the contemporary woman, caught between nostalgia for the memories of homes she has left behind and her experiences of traveling and moving between different places. Through her work, she reflects on the challenges and struggles of everyday life, finding solace in the company of friends and in an ongoing inner dialogue with an imaginary bird—the only companion that listens to the feelings she tries to conceal. The bird becomes her confidant, particularly during times when she is forced to travel or relocate despite her deep desire for stability.
The contrast created through the use of vibrant and lively colors in her paintings reflects the tension between the attempt to conceal inner emotions and their inevitable manifestation through the colors of the surrounding places and people. Her work suggests that what lies within us ultimately reveals itself on the outside, no matter how deeply we try to hide it.
Two of her paintings, “Blossoming Harmony” (2023) and “The Nature Within” (2022), have been acquired for the permanent collection of the Haegeumgang Museum in South Korea.
