Tambourine Players

The painting presents a composition featuring two young women playing tambourines, immersed in a state of harmony and enjoyment as they engage with the beauty of the music. They are seated on wooden benches, gently leaning their heads toward one another to emphasize the beauty of their faces.

The varied positioning of their full, solid legs creates a strong sense of grounding and balance within the composition. This treatment reflects the artist’s influence by ancient Egyptian sculpture, in which the feet are often deliberately emphasized to convey stability and strength.

The movements of the arms and hands vary naturally, suggesting that the women are striking the tambourines with strength yet in a fluid and graceful manner. These gestures enhance the expressive quality of the composition and celebrate the beauty and vitality of the female body.

The background depicts the interior surroundings of a traditional home. A wall opening or window can be seen, with two traditional water jars placed upon it. In front of them is a cat that appears to have been awakened or stimulated by the sound of the tambourines. Its elongated body, raised head, and graceful posture direct its gaze toward the two women, drawing the viewer’s eye toward the center of the composition.

On the opposite side, a traditional mizara water jar is topped by three pigeons, symbolizing peace, serenity, and coexistence with the joyful atmosphere of the scene.

The floor is rendered through areas of light and shadow, created with varied touches of color applied using a palette knife. The painting is dominated by a range of bright, luminous colors that reinforce the overall feeling of joy, happiness, and celebration.
