The Bee and the Wasp

The painting presents a composition featuring two children playing “The Bee and the Wasp,” a traditional game that was once widely popular in southern Egypt.

The two children appear in the center of the composition, with one carrying the other on his back. They then alternate positions by bringing one child’s feet down to the ground while the other’s feet rise into the air. The movement is fluid and graceful, expressing agility and balance, which are particularly evident in the carefully rendered movements of their hands and feet.

The surrounding space is defined by the colors of the background: yellow, representing the sandy ground, and blue, representing the sky. The children wear traditional Nubian clothing, consisting of white galabiyas (taqshita), white trousers, black araqah or sadiri (vests), and red traditional caps.

Their dark complexions and wide, bright eyes convey the innocence, kindness, and purity of childhood, while the overall composition captures the playful spirit and physical harmony of this traditional Egyptian children's game.
