Khaled Sorour is an Egyptian visual artist and a Professor at the Faculty of Art Education, Helwan University. He previously served as Head of the Fine Arts Sector at the Egyptian Ministry of Culture. He is a member of the Syndicate of Plastic Artists, as well as several art groups and societies in Egypt.
Sorour has been active in the Egyptian art movement since 1985 and has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Egypt and abroad. He served as Assistant Commissioner of the Egyptian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2007 and as Egyptian Commissioner in Vienna in the same year.
He has received numerous awards and artistic scholarships, including an important art scholarship in the United States. His works are held in the collections of various organizations and institutions in Egypt, as well as in several Arab and international countries.
His artistic practice draws primarily on two sources: everyday Egyptian life and Egyptian folklore, including both ancient Egyptian and Nubian heritage. His main interest lies in the lives of ordinary Egyptians and their relationship with the Egyptian street, encompassing its locations, streets, homes, people, emotions, dreams, problems, social situations, and interactions with the public.
Color and the black line play a central role in his work, serving both as defining elements of his artistic style and as means of reinforcing the concepts, ideas, visions, and situations explored in each piece.
His use of color is characterized by flat, vivid, and abstract areas of color that carry psychological meanings and associations. He also employs illusionistic perspective to emphasize and clarify the conceptual value of the work without visual confusion. The spontaneous black outlines surrounding the elements and forms are considered one of the distinctive techniques of his artistic style.
