Lina Osama (b. 1986, Cairo) is an Egyptian figurative painter based in Cairo. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Zamalek and studied at the Salzburg Academy of Fine Arts in Austria from 2006 to 2009.
Osama has held numerous solo exhibitions in Cairo and participated in more than 130 international group exhibitions across the world, from Paris to Venezuela and Taiwan. Her paintings collage imagery from ancient, modern, and contemporary Cairo, reinterpreting its visual heritage through vibrant jewel tones of ruby, emerald, sapphire, and gold.
Osama adopts a feminist approach in her artistic practice, placing femininity, womanhood, and motherhood at the center of her paintings. Echoing the Coptic Fayoum portraits, her female figures are characterized by enlarged and stylized eyes. Her paintings search for truth through beautiful irrationality, with imagery swirling like a dream and incorporating scattered symbolic elements such as the Maspero Building, floral clippings and prints, and patterns created using household lace.
She received the First Painting Prize from Zamalek Art Gallery and the Fine Art Lovers Association in 2014, as well as the Drawing Prize at the Cairo Youth Salon in 2007. She has also received artistic residencies at Siwa Oasis from the Egyptian Ministry of Culture in 2009 and 2018, in addition to the ALDAU International Artist Residency in 2021.
Osama is the founder and curator of Living Units Visual International Art Initiative, established in 2016, with artistic activities in Egypt, Vienna, Romania, and Morocco.
After studying Egyptology and filmmaking, Osama continued to develop her artistic practice, exhibiting her work internationally in more than 130 exhibitions, art fairs, and biennials. Her work has been presented through prestigious galleries and institutions, including Gmundten 422 Gallery in Austria, Made In. Gallery in Venice, Go Art Projects in Bucharest, SoHo Gallery in Sweden, Sharjah Gallery at the American University in Cairo, Picasso East Art Gallery, T.A.M., Picasso Gallery, Azad, Nile Art Gallery, Bibliotheca Alexandrina, and the Mahmoud Said Museum Complex.
Her international and regional presentations include World Art Dubai 2020, EMAAR Art Town Art Fair 2020 and 2021, Egypt International Art Fair 2020 and 2021, the Venezuela Biennial 2021–2022, the 43rd Annual General Exhibition in 2022, Art D’Egypte 2022 and 2023, and the Empower Her Art Forum at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in 2023.
