Mohamed Abla

Mohamed Abla is one of Egypt’s most prominent contemporary artists working across multiple media. He was born in 1953 in Belqas, in the Nile Delta, and graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Alexandria in 1973.

After graduation, he spent seven years traveling across Europe, where he studied sculpture and graphic arts in Vienna and Zurich.

His professional career began in 1979 with his first solo exhibition in Hamburg, followed by numerous exhibitions across Europe. He received the First Prize at the Kuwait Biennale in 1994 and the Grand Prize at the Alexandria Biennale in 1997.

Abla’s artistic practice focuses on visually deconstructing Egyptian reality. He has also contributed significantly to independent cultural work and art education through founding the Fayoum Art Center, as well as establishing the first Caricature Museum in the region. He currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Abla Art Foundation.
