Waiting - Bassam Al Zoghby

The painting is part of the “Waiting” series. It depicts a girl standing beneath a group of trees, waiting for something to happen that might break the stillness—perhaps the return of someone or the beginning of a new life. Just as she waits, the trees seem to await the cycle of life and the return of spring once again.

Bassam Al-Zoghby was born on 18 May 1970. He developed an interest in photography as an amateur while studying at the Faculty of Law, Ain Shams University. After graduating in 1993, he began working as a professional photographer. He joined Al-Gomhouriya newspaper as a photojournalist from 1995 to 1997, followed by Akhbar Al-Youm newspaper from 1997 to 2004, and finally Al-Ahram newspaper, where he has worked since 2004.

The artist began participating in art exhibitions in Egypt and abroad in 2001 and has received numerous awards. He held his first solo exhibition in 2010 at the Saad Zaghloul Cultural Center. In 2012, Al-Zoghby received the Honorary Award at the 72nd International Photographic Salon of Japan. In 2013, he held his second solo exhibition, “Freedom,” at Al-Gezira Arts Center, followed by his third solo exhibition, “Solo,” at the Saad Zaghloul Cultural Center in 2016.

Bassam Al-Zoghby’s work is based on reformulating the scene during the photographic process through his distinctive approach. He seeks to move photography beyond its traditional concept of documenting reality toward abstraction, transforming bodies into radiant energies intertwined with movement and color.
